Q: When will I know the details of my host family? A: You will receive information about your host family with your course confirmation.
Q: Can I change my host family? A: If you are not happy with your host family, please talk to us first, so we can try to help solving the problem. If it cannot be solved, we will find a new family for you. Normally, the two weeks notice rule applies. The first change is free of charge, additional changes result in an administation fee.
Q: I'm a vegetarian. Is that a problem? A: No. Please tell us about any special needs when you apply for a course, so we have sufficient time to take care of this.
Q: What if I take a holiday? A: It is generally no problem to leave school for a week or two. Please inform us about your holiday plans early.
Q: How far away from school is my homestay? A: Whitianga is a small town, most homestays are within walking distance from school. Many host families provide a bicycle or arrange for you to get to school and back.
Q: Can I leave my homestay to move into another accommodation? A: Yes, but you must give at least two weeks notice.
Q: A friend/brother/sister... is coming for a visit. Can he/she stay with me for a few days? A: You should discuss this with your host family. If it should not be possible, we can help you to find a room in Whitianga.
Q: What if I don't like the food? A: Don't be shy, tell your host family about it. Your host family is happy when you are happy. If it doesn't help, talk to us at Evakona school.

  FAQ about Activities

Q: Can I choose the activities that I would like to do? A:

Yes, if you have booked an activity course with privately arranged activities. Please tell us about your plans before the start of your course, so we can organise this for you.

If you join the Friday afternoon activities as part of the General/Intensive English course, activities will change every week. The longer you stay, the more different activities you will do of course.

Q:

How is the weather in Whitianga?

A:

Summer: the sun is strong and it can get very warm, but rarely above 30°C. Sometimes it is very windy and it can rain too. It gets cool at night.

Winter: the weather can be very mixed. Sun, wind, rain...but no snow. We sometimes get frost at night.

Sunny days can be beautiful and warm. The average daytime temperature is usually around 15°C.

Q: What clothing should I bring? A:

For summer and winter we recommend shorts and T-Shirt, a light jacket, long pants and a warm jumper for the evenings. Don't forget to bring your swim suit!

If you come here in winter you should also bring a thermal wear, a woolen hat and a scarf.

Q: Can I swim in the sea? A:

Yes, you will love it! Many people enjoy snorkelling and diving because the water is very clear. Surfing and body-boarding is also very popular, and of course, simply swimming.

The water temperature in summer is normally between 20°C and 25°C. In winter it cools down though.

Q: Is there any leisure activity available that is attractive for Japanese? A:

If you are talking about Pachinko - no. However, one bar in town does karaoke once a week, and there are several karaoke bars in Auckland. Minimum age 18!

Most Japanese students enjoy the way how New Zealanders spend their free time and weekends, find it out!

Q:

How can I get around?

Is there public transport?

A:

The public transport is limited. Therefore we encourage you to join the Friday afternoon activities, as they often go to places where it is otherwise difficult to get (beautiful beaches, mountains etc.).

Sometimes, students or teachers also organise extra activities with private or rental cars at weekends.

Regular bus services connect Whitianga with other towns.

Q: How far is it from Auckland to Whitianga? A: About 200 kms. By car it takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, by shuttle-bus about 3.5 hours (under normal conditions). During summer there are three bus connections from Whitianga to Auckland every day.

There is a cinema in town, many cafes, pubs and bars. Some Tuesday evenings we have our "International Coffee Club" where students (and others) come together to play table tennis, board and card games, or just sit together, talking, laughing and having fun. Students often organise parties of course.

If you are looking for nightlife, you can find it in one of the bars or pubs in town (but you must be at least 18 years old to go there - ID required). Often there are live bands playing or DJ music at weekends.

Q: Is Japanese food easily available in Whitianga? A: The supermarket in Whitianga has a selection of Japanese food. You can get all you need to make sushi rolls for example...
